So said George Washington Sears, better known as Nessmuk, in his wonderful book published in 1891 titled simply "Woodcraft.""Go light, the lighter the better. So that you have the simplest material for health, comfort, and enjoyment"
That quote has been the guiding philosophy of many outdoor enthusiasts for nearly 150 years. It seems easy enough, just leave what you don't need at home, right? Well Horace Kephart, a contemporary of Nessmuk's, summed up what really happens.
"I never knew a camper who did not burden himself, at first, with a lot of kickshaws that he did not need in the woods, nor one who, if he learned anything, did not soon begin to weed them out; nor even a veteran who ever quite attained his own ideal of lightness and serviceability."And that is what this blog is all about. Weeding out the kickshaws and trying to find the gear that fits my ideal of "lightness and serviceability." But it is more than that, it is driven by the thought that no one needs to spend a small fortune on camping gear. Why should we? We go to the woods to simplify, not to make complex our life. There are lots of fancy new things to spend fortunes on, and it is often said that you get what you pay for. However, there is lots of inexpensive, good quality gear out there that I think needs more attention.
That is the focus of this blog, testing the "Wal-mart" price gear and finding the little gems that one can find that work great and let us not worry about the price, and go out and find adventure!
